The Basics
  • Sophomore starter Shannon Saile (Land O'Lakes, Florida / Land O'Lakes HS) made it 10 strikeouts or more in all three season starts, but the offense could not back up her effort in a 2-0 loss to Hofstra in eight innings in day three of the Felsberg Invitational Softball Tournament in Miami.
  • FIU slips to 2-3, while Hofstra finishes the weekend 3-2
  • FIU got a hit from the top two batters in the lineup, but the Panthers stranded all four runners who reached base in the game.
  • Neither team got on the scoreboard for seven regulation innings, as the pitching and defense were stellar all around.
  • The Pride got the leadoff batter of the game to third on a triple by Kristin Hellam, but Saile struck out the next three batters to preserve the shutout. Only two runners reached second in the first seven innings.
  • The Panthers only got one runner to second against Hofstra starter Sarah Cornell, who struck out 11 Panthers.  
  • The Pride scored twice in the eighth after an error led to a baserunner. That was followed by a home run from Sarah Edwards for the game's only scoring play.
  • Cornell got the win (2-1), allowing just two hits, one walk and one hit batter.
  • Saile took her first loss of the season (2-1). In eight innings, she allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks, with 10 strikeouts. She has 40 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched this season.
Stat of the Game
Hofstra was just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-9 until extra innings. Saile held the Pride to a .115 average (3-for-26).
