Four FIU pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters as the Panthers shut out Grambling, 3-0, Friday night at the FIU ballpark.
The Panthers evened their record at 2-2. The Tigers fell to 3-3.
Tyler Myrick (1-0) started for FIU. The sophomore right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, allowed one hit and struck out seven.
Freshman
Christian Santana followed with 2 1/3 shutout frames and struck out four. Sophomore
Gio Soto struck out three over 1 1/3 innings and freshman
Will Saxton struck out the final batter to record his first save.
FIU got the only run it would need in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter
Austin Shenton doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch by Tigers starter Raul Baduel (0-1).
FIU made it 2-0 in the third inning. Shenton led off the inning with a single, took third base on a single by
Christian Khawam and scored on an RBI single by
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr.
Shenton,
Adan Fernandez and Hampton each had two hits for the Panthers.
The Tigers threatened in the eighth and ninth innings but Soto and Saxton shut the door.
In the eighth, the Tigers loaded the bases with one out against Santana and freshman reliever
Everett Hurst. In came Soto to face Grambling's top hitter Richard Ortiz. Soto got ahead of Ortiz with an 0-2 count before the power-hitting catcher worked the count to 3-2. Soto struck out Ortiz looking for the second out. Then punched out cleanup batter Trevin Bolden to quell the threat.
Grambling brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth against Soto before Saxton came in from the bullpen to strike out Drexler Macaay to end the game.
FIU and Grambling resume their three-game series Saturday with the first pitch of the middle game of the series at 6 p.m.
