The Basics
- FIU women's basketball finished its Conference USA road trip by running into a hot-shooting Charlotte squad for an 80-57 loss Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena.
- FIU drops to 6-16 on the season, 3-6 in C-USA. Charlotte is now 9-13 overall, 5-4 in league play.
- The 49ers shot .544 in the game, a season-high for an FIU opponent this season.
- After scoring the first two field goals of the game, Charlotte went cold early and FIU put together an 8-0 run to lead most of the first quarter. The Panthers led by two at the end of the first, 16-14.
- The 49ers started going inside the paint in the second quarter, with success. Charlotte shot 10-for-13 in the second quarter and pulled away with an eight-point lead, 38-30, at the half. FIU was limited to 2-for-17 shooting in the second, but hit 9-for-11 free throws to keep the game from getting away.
- Charlotte did not let up in the second half, connecting on 17 field goals and shooting .567 in the final two periods to pull away.
- FIU had a 15-13 margin in offensive rebounds, but Charlotte pulled down five more total rebounds (39-34) in the contest. The 15 offensive rebounds were the second-most in a C-USA game for FIU this season.
- For the second-straight game, and the fifth time this season, sophomore Alexis Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida / Covenant Christian) led the team in scoring. She poured in 24 points and shot 5-for-12 (.416) from three-point range in the contest. She hit all seven free-throw attempts in the game, pushing her streak to 18 in a row, and 22 of 24 this season.
- Gordon was FIU's only double-digit performer in the game. Redshirt junior Kiandre'a Pound (Gifford, Florida / Sebastian River HS) had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Â
Stat of the Game
The Panthers had just nine turnovers, the first time in conference this season not getting into double-digits in that category.
Â
From the Bench
"I thought we played well for a half," said FIU Head Coach
Tiara Malcom. "We had energy, we rebounded, we moved the ball, we took good shots. We didn't do those things in the second half and Charlotte's length and athleticism eventually overwhelmed us. Basketball is a game of runs. When the other team makes a run, we need players to decide to stop the run and get us going."
Â
Next up for FIU
The Panthers return home for two contests next week. The homestand starts Thursday night at 7 p.m., when North Texas visits the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Â
