CHARLOTTE, NC -- Charlotte scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally past FIU, 8-6, Sunday afternoon at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte.
The 49ers (11-8, 2-1 Conference USA) took two of three games from the Panthers (10-11, 1-2 C-USA).
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, the 49ers tied the score on a solo home run by Jackson Mims off
Nick MacDonald (1-1).
Charlotte then loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single by Drew Ober. Hunter Jones snapped the tie with a two-run single to right.
FIU fell behind 2-0 after the first two innings but came back to take a one-run lead.
Jose Garcia hit his team-leading eighth home run in the fourth inning. It was a solo shot for Garcia.
In the fifth,
Juan Teixeira led off with a single and came home on a double by
Derek Cartaya to tie the score.
Austin Shenton followed with a single and later scored on a single by
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr.
FIU freshman right fielder
Adan Fernandez was 3 for 4 with his first collegiate home run. Fernandez hit the solo homer in the sixth.
On deck, FIU returns home to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. The first pitch from Infinity Insurance Park is at 7 p.m.
