Behind a two-home run, six RBI performance from
Eddie Silva, FIU split a doubleheader with Marshall on Saturday at Infinity Insurance Park.
The Panthers (20-22, 9-11 Conference USA) won the first game, 15-0, and the Thundering Herd (18-22, 6-14 C-USA) took the nightcap, 6-5.
Game 1 – FIU 15, Marshall 0
Silva led an FIU 12-hit barrage in the opener. The redshirt junior second baseman was 4 for 5 with six RBI in the first game. Silva a hit two-run double in the first inning to give starter
Andres Nunez all the runs he would need.
Silva added two-run home runs in the third and seventh innings.
FIU scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to salt the game. After Silva hit his second two-run home run to give him 11 for the team lead,
Jose Garcia followed with a solo homer to tie Silva for the team lead.
Austin Shenton added a three-run home run in the big seventh inning. Shenton has nine homers on the season.
Nunez (5-2) had another stellar start going seven scoreless innings and striking out seven to record his team-leading fifth win.
Game 2 – Marshall 6, FIU 5
Cameron Collett's RBI triple in the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie and pushed the Herd past the Panthers in the nightcap.
FIU trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning before tying the score. Silva led off the sixth with a single and Garcia reached on an error by third baseman Kody Matthews.
After a sacrifice bunt by
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr.,
Adan Fernandez doubled home Silva and Garcia.
Javier Valdes's RBI single scored Fernandez with the tying run.
Fernandez's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth brought FIU to within, 6-5, but that was as close as the Panthers got.
Silva was 6 for 7 in the doubleheader to raise his average to .324. Silva and Garcia are tied for the team lead with 11 home runs and 32 RBI each.
Fernandez was 4 for 9 with four RBI in the twin bill and
Derek Cartaya was 3 for 6 with five runs scored.
The Panthers and Herd play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
