BIRMINGHAM, AL –
Will Saxton's two-run single down the right field line lifted FIU to a 6-4 win over UAB in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
Both games of the doubleheader Sunday were scheduled for seven innings due to travel constraints for FIU.
With the score tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, the Panthers (15-17, 5-6 Conference USA) got help from Blazers reliever Ty Harris (0-2), who walked
Austin Shenton, hit
Eddie Silva with a pitch and walked
Jose Garcia to load the bases. Saxton followed with a looping single scoring Shenton and Silva to break the tie.
Saxton scored the sixth FIU run when he hustled home from second base on a wild pitch.
Andres Nunez (2-2) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to record the win but not before dodging trouble in the bottom of the seventh.
The Blazers (14-15, 6-5 C-USA) got a run off Nunez in the seventh on three singles. With the potential winning run at the plate twice, Nunez struck out Jim Jeffries and Price Visintainer to end the game.
