BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI – David Miranda's three-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed Florida Atlantic past FIU, 7-4, in Game 1 of the Conference USA Championship at MGM Park Wednesday afternoon in Biloxi.
With the loss in the double-elimination tournament, the Panthers (26-27) drop into the losers' bracket. FIU faces an elimination game against the loser of Rice and Louisiana Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m. EDT.
FIU and FAU began play at 9:10 a.m. Central and finished at 4:43 p.m. after two lightning delays that totaled three hours and 14 minutes.
The Panthers had an early 1-0 lead before the first delay. The Owls jumped ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning before the teams traded runs over the next two and a half innings.
With FIU down 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning,
Eddie Silva led off the frame by belting his 16
th home run of the season. The solo shot tied the score and placed Silva in a tie with former FIU shortstop Hiram Silfa with 16 home runs for sixth place on the FIU single-season home run list.
FAU regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth before FIU tied it in the seventh.
In the seventh,
Derek Cartaya led off with a single to left. Cartaya, who was 5 for 5, tied the Conference USA Tournament single-game record for hits last done by LA Tech's Raphael Gladu in 2016.
Logan Allen followed Cartaya with a single and
Austin Shenton singled to right to score Cartaya and tie the score 3-3.
However, the Owls went ahead again in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Gunnar Lambert.
FIU freshman right fielder
Adan Fernandez answered in the eighth with a solo home run to tie the score 4-4. It was Fernandez's 10
th home run of the season to move him into third place all by himself on the FIU freshman home run list. Fernandez was tied with former FIU slugger Edwin Rios, who hit nine homers as a freshman in 2013. Fernandez only trails teammate
Jose Garcia (13 HR) and former FIU outfielder Jabari Henry (12 HR).
Fernandez was 3 for 4 while Silva was 2 for 5, including a double.
Starter
Andres Nunez gave the Panthers two scoreless innings before having to come out of the game due to the extended lightning delay. Allen followed Nunez with two shutout innings and he also had to leave the mound because of a long lightning delay. Allen moved to play center field and was 1 for 4.
