Panthers Run Past 49ers on Homecoming

The FIU football team exploded for 350 yards on the ground to beat Charlotte at home

MIAMI (Oct. 12, 2019) – FIU powered past Charlotte 48-23 on Saturday night, as the Panthers picked up their first Conference USA win of the season.

With the win, FIU improves to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Charlotte falls to 2-4 and 0-2 on the year.

The rushing attack was the story for FIU on Saturday night, as Anthony Jones and Napoleon Maxwell each crossed the century mark on the ground. Jones had 117 yards and four scores, while Maxwell earned 114 yards and a touchdown. The four touchdowns by Jones is tied for the most by a non-quarterback since T.Y. Hilton (2010) and Rashod Smith (2004)

James Morgan had a very efficient night in the pocket, passing for 160 yards and two scores on 13-of-16 passing. Sage Lewis led the Panthers defensively, finishing the game with nine total tackles, while Alexy Jean-Baptiste added six tackles and a half sack.

With FIU trailing 10-7 entering the second quarter, the Panthers used a 21-point second quarter to gain back momentum and carry a 28-17 lead into the locker room following a five-yard touchdown reception from Morgan to Jones.

The Panthers didn't waste any time coming out of the break, as Jones found the endzone this time on the ground after a five-yard scamper to put FIU up 34-17. After a Charlotte score made it 34-23, Jones raced 41-yards for his third score of the game to put the Panthers ahead 41-23 heading into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter Jones broke off a 13-yard run and burst into the end zone for his fourth score of the night, as FIU produced 48 points for its highest scoring output of the season.
