MIAMI (Oct. 14, 2019) – In this FIU Athletics weekly recap, the FIU men's soccer team took down No. 16 Kentucky to stay unbeaten to highlight the week.
Below is a brief recap of how each FIU team performed this past week.
Men's Soccer
FIU stayed unbeaten last week as the Panthers took a pair of road matches against Florida Gulf Coast and No. 16 Kentucky. Both wins came in the final minutes as the Panthers scored game-winners in the 104th and 88th-minute marks.
Mohamed Conde was awarded C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts, after earning two assists and Sunday's game-winner against the ranked Wildcats. FIU hosts No. 5 Charlotte on Friday night, with the two undefeated teams taking the pitch at 7 p.m. ET.
Swim & Dive
FIU gets back to competition this weekend after hosting the Blue & Gold Alumni Intrasquad Meet. The Panthers will host the Dual-A-Pool-Ooza on Oct. 18-19 with Rice, Tulane and Denver visiting the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
Women's Soccer
FIU dropped its lone match of the week, as the Panthers fell to visiting WKU on Sunday. FIU hits the road for a Thursday matchup against Middle Tennessee, slated to start at 8 p.m. ET.
Cross Country
FIU closed out the regular season at Tallahassee last weekend, as the Panthers competed at the FSU XC Invite.
Rahel Gebretsadik once again led the Panthers, finishing the 5K in 18:34, a 12-second PR for the junior, while placing 31st of 228 runners. The Panthers will now prepare for the C-USA Championships, to be held Nov. 2 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Football
The FIU football team won its second-straight game after a dominant 48-23 victory over Charlotte on Homecoming. The Panthers had two running backs over the century mark in rushing, as FIU ran for 350 yards against the 49ers.
Anthony Jones scored four times, marking the most single-game touchdowns by a non-QB since T.Y. Hilton. FIU caps its three-game homestand against UTEP this Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
Volleyball
FIU volleyball split its weekend at home, as the Panthers beat Charlotte in five sets before dropping a tough contest to WKU on Sunday.
Abbie Hughes earned 64 assists against the 49ers on Friday night, which marked the most by any FIU player since the Panthers joined the C-USA. The Blue & Gold hosts another pair of home matches this week, with Florida Gulf Coast visiting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, before capping the homestand against UTEP at 7 p.m. ET on Friday and hitting the road for UAB on Sunday.
