Box Score ATLANTA (Nov. 11, 2019) – The FIU women's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2019-20 season, as the Panthers defeated Georgia State on the road, 70-63.
With the win, FIU evens its record to 1-1 on the year. GSU drops to 0-2 on the season.
FIU was led by
Jiselle Thomas, who scored 20 points from the floor and added six rebounds and four assists to round out the stat sheet.
Chelsea Guimaraes and
Diene Diane also scored in double-figures, as the Panther pair earned 15 and 14, respectively. GSU's Taylor Henderson led all scorers with 31 points on the afternoon.
The Panthers from Miami outshot Atlanta's Panthers 51% to 34%, while FIU was a blistering 48% from behind-the-arc after nailing 10-of-21 shots from 3-point range. Thomas and Diane combined for seven of FIU's made 3-pointers.
FIU came out strong from the opening tip, as the Panthers used an 11-0 run to build a 20-10 lead after the first period. Despite GSU's 13-2 run to end the half, FIU led 42-31 at the break thanks to the first-quarter cushion.
GSU outscored FIU by nine points in the third quarter, as the Panthers from Atlanta trailed by only two points entering the final quarter of play. The Blue & Gold pushed past GSU in the fourth period however, as FIU bettered the home team 17-12 in the final period to pick up a 70-63 victory in Atlanta.
