No. 23 FIU Falls to No. 17 Charlotte in C-USA Tournament Semifinals

The No. 3 seeded Panthers fell to the No. 2 seeded 49ers in Norfolk, Virginia

NORFOLK, Virginia (Nov. 15, 2019) – In a cold and rain-soaked night in Norfolk, Virginia, the No. 23 ranked FIU men's soccer team came up short in the Conference USA Tournament Semifinals, as they fell to No. 17 Charlotte by a score of 1-0.

No. 3 seeded FIU falls to 10-3-5 on the season and ends its run in the C-USA tournament, while No. 2 seed Charlotte improves to 11-2-4 and advances to the tournament finals to face No. 1 seed Marshall.

The rain was falling from the get-go on a night that saw temperatures drop to 45 degrees at the Old Dominion Soccer Complex. After playing to a scoreless draw in their first meeting on Oct. 18, FIU and Charlotte were off to a similar start in the semifinals with stout defense and physicality on display from both sides. The 49ers were able to break through early on however after a counterattack led to a header goal by Teddy Chaouche in the 14thminute. FIU fired three shots in the first period including one on-goal but was unable to tie the score before the break.

The Panthers were able to move the ball into the attacking third on several possessions after the intermission and outpaced the 49ers 10-5 in the second-half shot-margin. FIU amped up its pressure in search of an equalizer and fired two more shots-on-goal while earning seven corners, but Charlotte's defense held strong in the last 45 minutes to keep FIU from pushing the ball through the goal line. The Panthers led 13-11 in the shot margin and 8-5 on corners for the night, but the 49ers made enough plays to edge FIU in a hard-fought match by both sides.

Nick O'Callaghan and Alessandro Campoy led FIU with three shot attempts in the match. O'Callaghan, Inigo Sagarduy, and Stephen Afrifa each had one shot-on-goal. Eight different Panthers logged a full 90 minutes.
