WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Nov. 23, 2019) - The FIU swim and dive program completed competition at the Purdue Invitational on Saturday with 612.5 points and the runner up title.
With the 612.5 points FIU takes down Purdue for the first time in program history. The Boilermakers fall in third place with 600 points. For the second time this year, FIU beats a Power-5 opponent after downing Pittsburgh who took fourth with 531 points.
"The team finished strong today. Top to bottom, swimmer and divers came out and performed well", said head coach
Randy Horner. "Like I mentioned yesterday, this was the best mid-season performance as a team that I can remember."
Over the course of three days, the FIU divers notched the top-two spots in every event (1-meter, 3-meter and platform). Today's competition was no different as
Rachel Foord finished first from the platform with her score of 293.10 and
Maha Gouda nabbed second with 289.00 points in the event. Foord and Maha's scores both qualify them for the NCAA Zone competition. Teammates
Kaitlyn Fredericks and
Brittany Haskell also earned qualifying marks with their scores of 241.70 and 228.00, respectively.
Stephanie Hussey swam a time of 16:55.37 in the 1650 free to grasp a seventh-place finish for FIU, followed by
Rachel Whitaker who landed 12th with a time of 17:21.45.
Julia Miranda picked up a fifth-place finish in the 200 back A final with a time of 1:58.22.
Michaela Trnkova swam the B final of the same event and notched a second-place finish when she touched at 1:58.95.
Lamija Medosevic tabbed the number three spot of the 100 free event A Final with her swim of 49.47, which also qualifies as an NCAA B Standard time.
Helga Fodor followed in second place during the B Final and a time of 50.69.
Taylor Grabenhorst clocked in at 2:14.94 in the 200 breast A final and was the fifth-place finisher in the event, while Delanie Goll finished sixth with a time of 2:15.67.
Kasia Kolodziej followed in the 200 fly where she secured sixth with a time of 2:00.16, while Hussey touched eighth with a swim time of 2:01.76. During the B Final of the event,
Emily Cordovi landed in the number four spot (2:00.96).
The Panthers concluded their Purdue Invite run with a top-five finish in the 400 free relay. Medosevic, Fodor,
Sara Gyertyanffy and Miranda got the job done with a 3:21.67 on the clock, ending the weekend as runner up finishing 12.5 points better than Purdue and 81.5 points better than Pittsburgh.
