BOCA RATON, Florida (Nov. 9, 2019) – The FIU football team dropped its contest against FAU by a score of 37-7 on Saturday evening in the 2019 edition of the Shula Bowl.
With the loss, FIU's record falls to 5-5 on the season and 3-4 in Conference USA, while FAU improves to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in C-USA. The Panthers now receive a bye week, before returning to action against the University of Miami on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Marlins Park. Napoleon Maxwell led FIU with 95 rushing yards on 16 attempts and added one touchdown on the ground.
On the defensive side,
Rishard Dames led the Panthers with 10 total tackles including 1.5 for loss and a QB hurry.
Trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, the Panther offense got going on its first possession of the second quarter when Maxwell exploded through the middle of the FAU defense and burned the Owls for a 75-yard touchdown run. The Owls tacked on their second field goal of the day before halftime to take a 13-7 lead over the Panthers heading into the break.
FIU saw the game slip away in the second half after the Owls found the endzone on their first two possessions of the third quarter. FAU strung together a touchdown drive coming out of the locker room and capped the score with a two-point conversion, before capitalizing on an FIU turnover with another touchdown to take to take a 28-7 lead over the Panthers. The Owls added another nine points in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
