FIU Falters at Minnesota

The Panthers six-game winning streak was snapped in Minnesota on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 28, 2019) – The FIU men's basketball team closed out non-conference play with a contest against Minnesota at Williams Arena on Saturday. The Panthers fell to the Golden Gophers 89-62, snapping the team's six-game winning streak.

With the loss, FIU fell to 9-4 while Minnesota moved to 7-5 with the win.

In the opening half, the Panthers shot 33.3% from the field and trailed 38-27 when the teams headed to the locker room. FIU held Minnesota to shooting 31.6%, but 12 fouls by the Panthers resulted in 11 points from the charity stripe for the opposition. Osasumwen Osaghae tallied six points in the opening stanza, and the senior also led the squad with six rebounds and three blocked shots.

FIU came out of the break shooting 40% from the field, but the squad was outscored 51-35 in the second half, resulting in the 89-62 loss.

Individually, Devon Andrews paced the Panther squad with 14 points in the loss. Osaghae tallied a double-double, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds. The big man also recorded five swats in the contest, bringing his career total to 190 blocks.

UP NEXT
FIU begins the new year with the start of Conference USA play. The Panthers host the UTEP Miners for a noon ET game on Thursday, Jan. 2, at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

ALUMNI GAME
The FIU men's basketball program welcomes back its alumni to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday, Jan. 18, for the Panthers' game against Middle Tennessee. Tipoff from the Conference USA clash is set for 7 p.m. ET. The 2019-2020 campaign marks the 25th anniversary of the banner season, which resulted in the program's first NCAA appearance.
