MIAMI (Feb. 15, 2019) – The FIU baseball team plated seven runs on Opening Night, but couldn't hold off Stony Brook as the Seawolves took a 13-7 decision over the Panthers.
With the loss, FIU falls to 0-1 on the year, while Stony Brook moves to 1-0 on the young season.
Stony Brook's Greg Marino earned the win, after pitching five innings and allowing just one run on the night before being pulled. FIU's
Logan Allen earned the loss, after giving up four runs in five innings on the mound.
Senior
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. led the Panthers at the plate going 3-for-4 and earning two RBI. The 6-5 left fielder smashed a homer in the eighth inning for his first dinger of the year. Sophomore
Jose Garcia also had a solid performance at the plate, going 2-for-5 on the night as he collected two hits with one being an RBI double.
FIU fell behind 7-1, before scoring four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to tighten the gap at 7-5.
Adan Fernandez singled to left field to get the scoring started, before Garcia doubled to left to bring around
Austin Shenton. A SAC fly by
Seth Cannady and a single from
Javier Valdes capped the scoring for the inning.
FIU couldn't hold off the Seawolves at the plate however, as Stony Brook plated six runs in the final two innings to earn the 13-7 victory on Opening Day.

The Panthers will look to bounce back against the Seawolves on Saturday night, as FIU and Stony Brook face off at 6 p.m. ET.
