MIAMI (Feb. 17, 2019) - FIU baseball earned its first victory of the season against Stony Brook by a score of 13-2, thanks in large part to a great second inning on Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium.
The Panthers' record improves to 1-2 on the young season, while Stony Brook drops to 2-1.
FIU's
Daniel Brown earned the win after pitching a scoreless inning and two thirds. Stony Brook's Jared Milch took the loss after allowing seven runs in one and two-thirds innings.
Freshman
Jarrett Ford had an outstanding day leading off for the Panthers, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. also played admirably recording three doubles on as many hits while driving in two RBIs.
The Panthers' lineup heated up in the bottom of the second inning as they poured in seven runs on five hits. Junior
Juan Teixeira initiated the scoring on a grounder that brought
Seth Cannady home from third base, before
Javier Valdes hammered a double to left field that sent around Hampton. Ford plated another two runs on a double, and a single by
Derek Cartaya drove home Ford. The scoring was capped by a two RBI inside-the-park home run by
Austin Shenton.
FIU added six runs as insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning and won the game by a final score of 13-2.
UP NEXT
Baseball is back in action on Tuesday evening at 7pm when FIU hosts Bethune-Cookman. The Panthers defeated the Wildcats by a score of 12-7 in their previous meeting last season.
