MIAMI (Feb. 5, 2019) - The women's tennis team completed the weekend 1-1 overall. Dropping the first match to Columbia (1-4) on Saturday, but closing out strong on Sunday against Seton Hall (4-0).
FIU snapped their two game losing streak against Seton Hall on Sunday (Feb. 3).The Panthers nearly swept. singles play. Of the six matches that took place, three resulted in victories and the rest remained unfinished with every Panther leading.
Umarova gave the Panthers their first victory of the day when she took down Seton Halls' Anicka Fajorova, 6-0,6-2. Followed by a win from Veksler who prevailed over Regina Pitts 6-1, 6-2. To close out the day, Akbas sealed the third victory with her win over Michal Matson 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman-duo
Basak Akbas and
Paulina Bakaite, opened up doubles play on a high note, with a 6-1 victory over the Pirates. Seton Hall picked up the second match which knotted doubles play at 1-1. It wasn't long after that the pair in,
Kamila Umarova and
Maryna Veksler were triumphant in a 6-3 victory that secured the doubles point for FIU.
On Saturday (Feb.2), Freshman Pauline Bakaite battled hard against Columbia's Yekaterina Alferova. The rookie picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win.
The Panthers dual match record improves 1-2 for the 2018-19 season.
