MIAMI (March. 1, 2019) - The FIU women's tennis team took a 6-1 decision over Marshall on Friday afternoon, as the Panthers improved to 2-0 in Conference USA play.
FIU is now 4-4 overall, with a 2-0 mark in C-USA play. The Panthers continue their homestand on Saturday at 11 a.m., as FIU welcomes non-conference foe Yale to Miami.
The Panthers opened the day against Marshall by taking the doubles point with ease, as the duo of
Sandra Bozinovic and
Maria Turrillo took a 6-3 decision over their Herd foes before the tandem of
Kamila Umarova and
Basak Akbas clinched the point with a 6-3 victory.
The dominance continued into singles action, as the Panthers took five of the first six sets to race past the Thundering Herd. Umarova pushed the Panther lead to 2-0, after the freshman took her match in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1. Turrillo's court was the next to fall, with the junior taking 6-1, 6-2 decision, before Akbas clinched the win for FIU with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court three.
Marshall earned their lone point of the day on court one, after
Maryna Veksler retired, before
Paulina Bakaite (6-3, 6-3) and Bozinovic (7-5, 6-3) put the exclamation point on the win to leave the final score at 6-1 in favor of the Panthers.

FIU hosts Yale on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m., before diving back into C-USA play against North Texas on Sunday, March 3 at noon.
