Skanes caps first-year with C-USA honor

DALLAS (March 11, 2019) – After a successful first-year campaign, FIU women's basketball's Ce'Nara Skanes was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, the league office announced on Monday. Voting was comprised of two votes per institution -- the women's basketball head coach and a media representative.

Skanes becomes the women's basketball program's first All-CUSA honoree since Alexis Gordon was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2017.

"I am so happy for Ce'Nara to receive this recognition from her league peers," Head Coach Tiara Malcom said. "Knowing Ce'Nara, she would prefer this award came with more team success, but that will come in time. Our entire program celebrates this honor for Ce'Nara and I look forward to watching her grow even more over the next three years."

The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native averaged 8.6 points per contest in 2018-19, while hauling in 8.1 rebounds per game to rank third in the conference. The 8.1 average ranked first among C-USA freshmen. Skanes also posted a team-high nine double-doubles on the year, which ranked third-most in the league and most among freshmen.

Skanes won C-USA Freshman of the Week honors once, after her 20-point, 13-rebound performance against Charlotte on March 2. The freshman forward's best scoring output came against FAU on Jan. 26, as she poured in a team single-game high of 23 points. Skanes hauled in 21 rebounds against Alcorn State on Dec. 20, which tied for the most in a single-game by any C-USA player for the 2018-19 season.
