CORAL GABLES (March 15, 2019) - FIU senior
Terrisa Russell set a school record in the discus, placing first in the event, as the Panthers opened up their 2019 outdoor campaign Friday at the University of Miami's Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables.
Russell set a personal best with the throw, more than two meters further than her previous PR in the event, with a distance of 53.44m.
Gabrielle Rains followed close behind with a throw of 51.33m for second place, and
Timberly Molden also earned points with a fifth-place finish.
"Our discus squad did real well," said assistant coach
Chris Sullivan. "Terrisa broke a school record, and Gabby was right behind her with 51 (meters). I know they're going to be doing well all year."
Clarissa Cutliff continued her dominance in the high jump with a mark of 1.76m, earning the top collegiate jump in the meet.
Kenflore Atilus finished sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.60m.
On the men's side, FIU saw strong performances in the 5,000m, with Elisero Torres crossing the line in 16:10, and

David Suarez debuted his outdoor season with a 17:06.
Michelle Fuentes competed in the women's 5,000m, finishing in 20:20.
"We're training through this meet. Coming off of indoor, we took some time off and we are getting back into training," said Sullivan. "I told my group that it's going to be a struggle this week - we're going to muscle through this weekend, and we'll start getting prepared for the meets coming up."
Action in the Hurricane Invitational continues Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free, and results can be found at deltatiming.com.
