HUNTINGTON, West Virginia (March 17, 2019) – The FIU baseball team fell 7-4 to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sunday afternoon to close out the opening weekend of conference play.
With the loss, the Panthers go to 10-9 (1-2 C-USA) on the season. Marshall moves to 12-6 (2-1 C-USA).
D'Andre Knight was the pitcher of record for Marshall.
Greyson Fletcher was dealt the loss.
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. tallied two base knocks to earn his team-leading 26th hit on the season. The senior also drove in a run. Hampton was joined by
Derek Cartaya, who drove in two, and
Javier Valdes, who also drove in one.
FIU didn't waste any time getting on the board Sunday, as FIU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back walks to
Jarrett Ford and Cartaya set the stage, before a Valdes groundout scored Ford and a Hampton single through the left side brought home Cartaya the very next at-bat.
The Panthers added another pair of runs in the visiting half of the second, when
Juan Teixeira and
John Rodriguez came home on a Cartaya bases loaded double.
Marshall answered with its own pair of runs in the bottom of the second and another pair in the fourth to tie it at four-all. That score stood until the bottom of the eighth when the Thundering Herd scored three on a bases-clearing double down the left field line.
Marshall's Michael Guerrero pitched the ninth and received the save.
