Tennis Picks Up Sixth-Straight Victory

Panthers downed the 49ers 4-1 on Thursday afternon

MIAMI (March 7, 2019) - The FIU women's tennis team won its sixth-straight match Thursday afternoon, after downing the Charlotte 49ers 4-1, to keep the winning streak alive.

The Panthers improve 7-4 overall and remain undefeated against Conference USA opponents (4-0).

FIU worked a quick 36 minutes to pick up the doubles point. Senior Maryna Veksler and Freshman Paulina Bakaite were the first to finish, an easy 6-1 battle set the tone for the afternoon. Over on court two, Sophomore Sandra Bozinovic and Junior Maria Turrillo worked fast to clinch the point. On court one, the freshman-duo of Kamila Umarova and Basak Akbas fought to the 5-2 mark but the match was left unfinished.

The second point registered when Bozinovic worked two quick sets which ended in a 6-2, 6-4 victory to push the Panther lead. Bakaite battled 7-6 in her first set on court five. She entered the breaker and came out triumphant (4-0). Her momentum carried into her second set which landed the Panthers their third point after she posted a 6-3 finish.

Veksler dropped her first set 6-2 but worked around the deficit and posted a 6-2 finish in set two. Unable to punctuate, she dropped a 6-3 decision to the 49ers in set number three and Charlotte picked up their lone point. Minutes later, Turrillo cliched for FIU when she worked the 49ers into three sets and came out with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win.

FIU hands Charlotte their second consecutive loss. The 49ers (8-5, 1-2 C-USA) traveled to Florida riding a seemingly hopeful six-game winning streak, the second longest in program history. For the Panthers, conference play is put on pause when they host four out of conference opponents at home, before taking on Rice in Houston, Texas in early April.
