MIAMI (April 12, 2019) – After being on the road for two weeks, the FIU baseball team returned home in roaring fashion with a 6-4 victory over No. 30 Southern Miss.
FIU improves to 14-19 and 5-8 in Conference USA play. Southern Miss falls to 20-11 (10-3) on the season.
Midseason All-American
Logan Allen fanned a career-high 13 batters over six strong innings of three-run ball to collect his fourth win of the season. Walker Powell was handed the loss after allowing four Panthers to score in 2.2 innings of work.
Panther pitchers struck out 18 Golden Eagles to set a program record for most strikeout in a C-USA game. The 18 is also the most strikeouts in a game since FIU struck out 18 UALR batters on 5/23/13.
In the batter's box,
Juan Teixeira led the Panthers by going three-for-three on the night with a RBI and a run. The duo of
Derek Cartaya and
Adan Fernandez each tallied two hits on the night. Fernandez added a RBI to his stat line as well.
The night started with Allen striking out the side in the first before Cartaya singled and advanced to second on a pass ball. An
Austin Shenton single pushed Cartaya to third and a Fernandez groundout scored the speedy second baseman.
Southern Miss tied the game in the second with a sac fly. FIU answered with three runs on five hits in the home half of the inning highlighted by double steal that included Cartaya stealing home to retake the lead for good.
FIU continued the scoring in the fifth with a Teixeira base knock that platted Fernandez. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth with a two-run home run before a
Kaeber Rog base hit pushed across Teixeira in the eighth add an insurance run.
Southern Miss scratched across a run in the ninth before
Jan Figueroa slammed the cage door shut to seal the 6-4 victory for his team leading fourth save on the season.
UP NEXT
Game two of the three game set is slated for Saturday at 6:00 p.m. before the weekend finale at noon on Sunday.
