FIU Athletics Weekly Recap: April 15

Another big week for the Panthers


MIAMI (April 15, 2019) – FIU Athletics had another successful outing this past week, as the Panthers eye a strong finish to the 2018-19 slate. The week was highlighted by a pair of C-USA series wins for the baseball and softball teams, with each program winning its second-straight weekend series. 

Below is a brief recap of how each FIU team performed this past week. 

Beach Volleyball
The FIU beach volleyball team split its final two duals of the regular season last week against Florida Southern and Stetson. The Panthers played two duals in three days, defeating the Mocs, 6-0, in Lakeland before closing out their regular season finale with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Hatters in Boca Raton. FIU finished its regular season with a 14-10 record and a 5-3 mark in Coastal Collegiate Sports Association play. In addition, the Blue and Gold have won three of its last five duals. The Panthers now head to the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships, April 19-21, in Emerson, Georgia, at the LakePoint Sports Complex.
 
Baseball
The FIU baseball team won its second-straight C-USA series this past weekend, after the Panthers took two of three over No. 30 Southern Miss. Led by C-USA Pitcher of the Week Logan Allen, the Panthers downed the Golden Eagles 6-4 on Friday night as Allen struck out a career-high 13 batters. FIU earned the series win on Saturday, as the Panthers lit up the scoreboard for a 16-6 victory. USM avoided the sweep on Sunday after taking the weekend capper. The Panthers hit the road on Tuesday, April 16 for a midweek matchup against Bethune-Cookman, before traveling to Old Dominion over the weekend. 
  
Softball
The FIU softball team took two of three from Marshall over the weekend to win its second-straight conference series. FIU run-ruled the Thundering Herd, 9-1, on Saturday, before Jessica Rivera hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Panthers a 5-1 victory to close out Saturday. The Herd avoided the sweep on Sunday, as the downed the Panthers 7-1. FIU is now 22-20 on the year and 4-11 in C-USA play. The Panthers hit the road this weekend for Charlotte, North Carolina for a three-game series on April 19-20 against the Charlotte 49ers. 
 
Track & Field
The FIU Panthers saw a number of strong performances and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational this past weekend. Clarissa Cutliff darned another victory in the high jump, with a mark of 1.82m, just .03m off her person best in the event. Terrisa Russell placed first in the hammer, with a throw of 62.55m, a personal best and school record. On the men's side, FIU once again saw a good showing from Reed Service, who placed third in the long jump with a mark of 7.53m. FIU will now send a number of athletes to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invite this weekend.
