MIAMI (May 18, 2019) – In a moment that only lives in Hollywood scripts,
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr. hit a walk-off homer on Senior Day to give FIU a 5-4 victory over Louisiana Tech and cap his career with the Panthers rounding the base paths.
FIU and LT were tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday, before Hampton smashed a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall in his final at-bat with the Blue & Gold.
With the victory, FIU improves to 23-32 on the year and 12-18 in C-USA play, while LT falls to 34-22 and 17-13 to cap the regular season.
Christian Dearman earned the victory on the mound, after coming in to get the final two outs in the top of the ninth. Jonathan Fincher was dealt the loss after giving up the walk-off homer to Hampton.
Hampton led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a homer in his final game at FIU.
Jarrett Ford and
Derek Cartaya each collected two hits at the top of the order, while
Austin Shenton earned two RBIs to continue his streak of reaching base safely to 29-straight games.
FIU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third frame, after RBI singles by Cartaya and Shenton led to three runs. LT doubled in a run to make it 3-1 in the fifth, before
Angel Tiburcio singled home a run to make it 4-1 in favor of the good guys in the next half inning.
The Techsters scored three more runs, with one coming in the sixth and two in the ninth to set up the heroics for Hampton in the bottom of the ninth. Coming to the plate as the lead-off hitter, Hampton didn't waste any time as the senior lifted a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to claim the 5-4 victory for the Panthers and create a memory that will last a lifetime.
