LUBBOCK, Texas (May 7 2019) – After having the originally scheduled doubleheader moved up due to the threat of severe weather across West Texas, the FIU baseball team fell 9-6 to No. 9 Texas Tech in game one before game two was ultimately canceled due to inclement weather.
FIU sits at 20-28 (9-15 Conference USA) heading into the final two weekends of the regular season. Texas Tech moves to 34-14 with the midweek victory over the Panthers.
Christian Santana surrendered four runs in four innings of work and was handed the loss. John McMillon was given the win for 2.2 innings of one-run ball in relief.
Derek Cartaya,
Javier Valdes,
Danny Perez and
Jarrett Ford each had a base knock on Tuesday afternoon. Despite only having one hit on the day, Ford tied the program record with five stolen bases in a game. The last Panther to swipe five bags was Dennis Diaz against Kansas State in 2002.
The Panthers manufactured runs in the first and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Ford reached on a fielder's choice in the first before stealing second and third as he scored on a Valdes groundout. With Ford on first and
Kaeber Rog on third in the third inning, a double steal play was on that resulted in Rog scoring.
Texas Tech answered with four in the fourth and four in the fifth sandwiched around a Panther run scored by Rog in the visiting half of the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. The Red Raiders added a run in the sixth before a Valdes double scored Cartaya and Rog in the seventh. Valdes later scored on a
Jose Garcia SAC fly to cut the lead to 9-6.
Texas Tech's Clayton Beeter was given a save after holding the Panthers at bay in the ninth.
