FIU Falls at FGCU to Open 2019

Women's soccer opens first game of season with a 2-0 loss in Fort Myers

FORT MYERS (Aug. 22, 2019) - The FIU women's soccer team fell to Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night, as a pair of goals by Marjorie Boilesen lifted the Eagles over the Panthers by a score of 2-0 in the season's opening match.

FGCU got on the board early in the first half after the Panthers were unable to stop an Eagle attack during the eighth minute. Boilesen hit the back of the net following a cross attempt that allowed Alyssa Abbondandolo to set up FGCU for its first goal of the season.

The Eagles wasted little time adding to their lead in the second period, as Boilesen booted another shot between the posts less than six minutes into the half. FIU did its best to test the FGCU defense as they fired off four shots on goal against the Eagles, but the Panthers were unable to find their first goal of the young season. Christina Velazquez presented an admirable effort to subdue the Eagle offense, posting a game-high five saves.

Eight Panthers made their debuts for FIU, as Ellen Halseth, Sydney AmparoAnyeli Solarte, Yolanda Albalat Collado, Laura Chavez, Carmen Marin, Andrea Rivas, and Charity O' Neal all saw the pitch for the first time while wearing the Blue & Gold.
