MIAMI (Sept.12, 2019) - After
picking up a pair of wins against Stetson and Hofstra at home over the weekend, the FIU volleyball team will compete in a trio of matches at the River City Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida.
The tournament opens up on Friday (Sept. 13) with a double header, the Panthers are scheduled to face LIU Brooklyn at 1:00 p.m. and will go head-to-head with Jacksonville at 7:00 p.m. FIU will meet North Florida on the court Saturday (Sept. 14) at 2 p.m. to cap the weekend stint in Jacksonville.
The Panthers will look to continue their momentum after adding a pair of wins to the win column at home for the first time in the 2019 season.
SCOUTING LIU BROOKLYN
LIU Brooklyn sports a 0-6 record on the year, having lost in straight sets to all six opponents since the season opened up.
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE
After starting the year 0-4, the Dolphins picked up their first win of the season against Chattanooga at the Troy Tournament but dropped the final match to Troy. They enter the competition with the Panthers sporting a 1-5 record.
SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
North Florida acts as co-host to the weekend tournament. After falling to USF on Sept. 10, they enter the weekend with a 2-5 overall record and hold a 1-2 count on their home court.
HUGHES NABS POW
Abbie Hughes was named the C-USA Setter of the Week after her outstanding performance last Friday. Home-court advantage served FIU well at Panther Fest this past weekend as the squad bounced back with two wins after a 0-3 start to the season. Victories over Stetson and Hofstra, a 2018 NCAA Tournament team, stemmed from an efficient offense ran by Hughes. The sophomore lifted 73 helpers for a 10.43 assists per set clip through seven sets. She tallied a double-double on 41 assists and 16 digs against Stetson, before falling a dig shy of another against Hofstra (32 assists, nine digs) in Friday's nightcap.
2018 RECAP
The 2018 FIU indoor volleyball season featured one of the program's most triumphant campaigns in recent memory as the team posted a 19-12 overall record to go along with a 9-5 mark in Conference USA play. The 19 wins marked the highest victory total for the program since 2011 when that year's squad recorded a total of 21 wins. The Panthers finished the regular season sixth overall in the Conference USA standings, but got hot at the perfect time, performing excellently in the conference tournament and reaching their first-ever C-USA Championship match.
