FIU was unable to survive Appalachian State on Friday in North Carolina

BOONE, North Carolina (Sep. 13, 2019) - The FIU women's soccer team fell to Appalachian State on the road Friday evening, as the Mountaineers defeated the Panthers by a slim margin of 2-1 at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.

FIU now falls to 1-5 on the season, while App. State improves to 2-4-1.

The Panthers led early in the first half after Rayquel Berry scored her third goal of the season off an assist by Laura Chavez in the fourth minute of the match. FIU out-shot App State 5-0 in the opening period and entered the break up by a score of 1-0.

About five minutes after the intermission, Hulda Ágúgústsdóttir got App State on the board as the Mountaineers equalized the score 1-1. The second half saw FIU continue to out-pace Appalachian State in shots and shots-on-goal, as with about five minutes left to play the Panthers led the Mountaineers 19-10 and 8-1 in those two categories, respectively. However after a night in which FIU controlled tempo for most of the game's duration, the Mountaineers were able to claim the lead as Hayley Boyles scored in the 81st minute, handing the Panthers a heartbreaking defeat by a score of 2-1.

Rayquel Berry scored her third goal of the season as she now leads FIU with six points in the 2019 campaign. Laura Chavez picked up her first career assist as a Panther, bringing her season point total to three. Ellen Halseth logged a game-high eight shots in the match, which also stands as an FIU career-high for the first-year Panther.
