Panthers Fall to UTEP on the Road

The FIU women's soccer team fell to the Miners in their first C-USA match of the season

EL PASO, Texas (Sept. 22, 2019) -  The FIU women's soccer team fell to UTEP on the road by a score of 3-1, as the Panthers opened their C-USA slate in El Paso, Texas on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers' record now stands at 2-6 for the 2019 season, while the Miners improve to 6-2-2.

UTEP scored first in the opening period as Danielle Carreon was able to find the back of the net in the 23rd minute to put the Miners up 1-0. The Panthers recorded two shots in the first half, while Christina Velazquez posted three saves in the period.

The second half saw the Panthers ramp up their offensive pressure as they fired nine shots at the opposing net, including five shots-on-goal for FIU. Lauren Crenshaw extended the Miners' lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute on a penalty shot, but FIU was able to shorten the deficit to 2-1 as Yolanda Albalat Collado scored on her own penalty kick attempt in the 76th minute. The Panthers fought to equalize the score late in the second half, but ultimately came up short in their efforts to tie the game. Jackie Miller added a third goal for UTEP in the 84th minute as the Miners extended their lead to 3-1, setting up the Miners for their first conference points of the 2019 season. 

FIU tied UTEP in the shot margin 11-11 on the day, while both teams also posted four saves in the outing. Albalat Collado led FIU with two points and four shots in the match, and is now tied for the team-lead with seven points in the 2019 campaign. The newcomer has scored in two consecutive games for the Panthers and also leads the team with three assists. Sierra Moss, Olivia Sandahl, Ashley Adams, and Albalat Collado all logged a full 90 minutes in the match. 

UP NEXT 
After concluding a stretch of three consecutive games on the road, the Panthers will return to Miami and play two games on their home pitch. FIU will host Charlotte on Thursday, Sept. 26 for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff at FIU Soccer Stadium, before welcoming Marshall on Sunday, Sept. 29 for a 1 p.m. ET start.
