Panthers Fall to Charlotte at Home

The FIU women's soccer team could not overcome the 49ers in front of their home crowd on Thursday night

MIAMI (Sept. 26, 2019) -  The FIU women's soccer team fell to Charlotte at home by a score of 2-0, as the Panthers played their first home C-USA match in Miami on Thursday night.

The Panthers' record now stands at 2-7 for the 2019 season, while the 49ers improve to 6-3.

Charlotte scored first in the opening period as Selah Gaylor was able to put the 49ers up 1-0 in the 33rd minute. The Panthers recorded three shots in the first half, while Christina Velazquez posted three saves in the period.

FIU was able to put some more pressure on the 49ers' net in the second half as they fired away seven shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. The best equalizing chances came from Rayquel Berry in the 50th minute and Anyeli Solarte in the 55th minute. Berry attempted a shot that went just high over the Charlotte crossbar, and Solarte fired a shot on-goal that was saved by goalkeeper Abby Stapleton. Later in the 57th minute, Ashton Mckane increased the 49ers' lead to 2-0 after she was able to score for Charlotte following a crowded scrum near the Panther goal-line. The margin remained the same the rest of the way, as the 49ers were able to earn the road victory by a score of 2-0 and claim their first points in the C-USA standings.

Ellen Halseth led the Panthers with three shots on the night, while Solarte led FIU with one shot-on-goal. Christina Velazquez grabbed six saves in the outing. Sierra Moss, Ashley Adams, and Yolanda Albalat Collado all logged a full 90 minutes in the match.
