FIU Falls to Georgia Southern in Double Overtime

The Panthers' comeback fell short in the 103-99 loss to the Eagles.

MIAMI (Dec. 19, 2020) – The FIU men's basketball team welcomed Georgia Southern to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Saturday night. The Panthers fell to the Eagles 103-99 in double overtime.

FIU dropped to 5-2 with the loss, while Georgia Southern moved to 5-2 following the win. The contest marks the first double-overtime game for the Panthers since 2016.

In the first half, the Panther squad came out flat, shooting just 33.3% overall while also committing 15 turnovers. The FIU bench outscored the opposition 12-9 but the Panthers trailed the Eagles 35-24 at the half. Individually, Radshad Davis and Petar Krivokapic each had eight points while Dante Wilcox tallied four rebounds.

Coming out of the break, FIU improved to 60.9% shooting from the floor and 68.8% from beyond the arc. The Panthers chipped away at the Eagles' lead, and Eric Lovett hit back-to-back threes to give FIU the 59-56 edge with 5:25 remaining. After going back and forth with Georgia Southern down the stretch, a three-pointer by Lovett gave FIU the 68-65 lead with 39 seconds remaining. The advantage did not last however, and at the end of regulation, the game was tied at 69 apiece.

Antonio Daye, Jr. had the hot hand for the Panthers, posting 12 of the team's 16 points in the first overtime. The team shot 83.3% for the period and Daye, Jr. nailed a layup with less than a second remaining to send the game into its double overtime.

During the second overtime period, FIU went 4-8 from the floor and 2-5 from three, but it was not enough as the team was outscored 18-14 and fell to Georgia Southern 103-99.

Overall, FIU went 52.7% from the floor and 51.5% from three in the loss. Five Panther players scored in double figures. After going scoreless in the opening frame, Daye, Jr. led the squad with 22 points and six assists, while Krivokapic logged a career-best 14 points.
