MIAMI (Feb. 15, 2020) - The FIU baseball team improved to 2-0 on Saturday, as the Panthers blanked the Rams 8-0 to continue Opening Weekend.
After a sudden downpour in the seventh inning, Saturday's game was called with the score standing at 8-0.
Tyler Myrick got the start for FIU on the mound, making his first appearance in 632 days. Myrick pitched 3.2 innings, allowing no runs and striking out four batters.
Steven Casey earned the win in relief however, pitching 2.1 innings. Fordham's John Stankiewicz was dealt the loss after going four innings and allowing a run.
Following three scoreless innings, the Panthers finally got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning as
Juan Teixeira singled to bring home two runs. FIU didn't look back after that, as the Panthers scored in each inning to follow to bring the final score to 8-0.
Jose Garcia had a big night at the dish, going 3-4 at the plate and driving in two of FIU's runs.
Derek Cartaya and
Ben Rozenblum each earned multi-hit games, with both Panthers collecting a double on the night.
KEY STAT
The Panther pitching staff held Fordham to .182 (2-11) with runners on, as FIU slammed the door shut on each potential scoring opportunity for the Rams.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will seek a sweep over Fordham on Sunday, with first pitch set for noon. The game will be streamed on CUSA.tv.
