Panthers Make History With Sixth-Straight Conference Title

FIU breaks C-USA record with sixth-straight title

ATLANTA (Feb. 29, 2020) - The FIU swimming and diving team made history at the McAuley Center, as the Panthers won their sixth-straight Conference USA title on Saturday evening. 

With the championship, the Panthers break the C-USA record for most consecutive titles won. The previous record was five-straight held by FIU and SMU (2006-10). The six-straight conference titles also rank as the most in a row by any athletic program in FIU history. 

FIU finished the meet 155 points ahead of second-place Rice as the Panthers racked up a score of 1044.5 for the C-USA Championships. The 1044.5 points for the Panthers also broke the record for most points scored by any team at the C-USA Championships. 

Randy Horner was named C-USA Swimming Coach of the Year following the win, while Nick Yang was honored as the C-USA Diving Coach of the Year. Stephanie Hussey earned C-USA Co-Swimmer of the Meet and Mandy Song was named the C-USA Diver of the Meet.

On the last day of competition, Julia Miranda led off the final session with the 200 back, as she swam a time of 1:58.47 to pick up the first gold medal of the night. Michaela Trnkova finished fifth with her time of 1:59.66 and Kelsie Campbell followed in eighth with a time of 2:02.99

Jasmine Nocentini followed with a victory in the 100 free A final, after posting a time of 49.83. Lamija Medosevic finished in fourth-place of the same event, tapping at 49.84.

FIU had three Panthers represent in the 200 breast, as freshman Delaine Goll won the A final with a time of 2:12.74. Senior Taylor Grabenhorst finished with a silver after only .15 seconds behind Goll with a time of 2:12.89. Victoria Cantu took home the top spot in the B final with a time of 2:19.86, while Helga Fodor finished seventh at 50.29. 

Stephanie Hussey sealed the title during the 200 fly A final, taking the number one spot when she touched at 1:58.19. Kasia Kolodziej finished sixth in the A final after she touched at 2:00.87. During the B final of the same event, Emily Cordovi swam a time of 2:00.33 for a win as well. 

The FIU divers did not disappoint from the platform finals competition. After scoring 1-5 during the preliminary rounds of the event, they replicated their finishes on the big stage to cap the night.

Maha Gouda took home the gold medal with a score of 311.90, while her preliminary score of 332.50 ranks as a new FIU record. Rachel Foord finished second with a score of 274.95 and Mandy Song captured bronze with a score of 264.90. Brittany Haskell was fourth to finish with her score of 257.80, Kaitlyn Fredericks landed fifth with 247.05 and Brooke Bouchard in eighth with her score of 207.15. 

The conference championships concluded with the 400 free relay as the Panthers won with a time of 3:19.48. The team of Nocentini, Fodor, Miranda and Medosevic chased down the Rice Owls to finish just .13 seconds ahead to earn the gold medal.
