FIU Excels in Latest APR Release

Women's Golf and Men's Soccer earn perfect multi-year scores

MIAMI (May 22, 2020) – With the release of the NCAA's annual Academic Progress Rate (APR), FIU had all of its athletic programs post above the required multi-year score of 930. Additionally, 10 teams beat their sport's national average to further FIU's commitment to academic excellence.

The 2020 report released by the NCAA features a four-year compilation of APR data from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. The APR uses a series of formulas related to student-athlete retention and eligibility to measure the academic performances of all participants who receive grants-in-aid on every team at every NCAA Division I college and university.

The APR holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term. Currently, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in NCAA championships. Since 2015-2016, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships.

Women's golf and men's soccer were recognized by the NCAA earlier this month for registering a perfect multi-year score of 1,000, ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport. It marked the sixth-straight year women's golf was recognized for its academic success.

A total of 10 programs at FIU beat the national average in their respective sports for Division I teams, with baseball, men's basketball, men's cross country, football, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, softball and volleyball bettering their peers. The men's soccer program finished 22 points ahead of its sport's national average to lead the way at FIU.
