MIAMI (Sept. 16, 2020) - Next up in our Q&A series with FIU women's tennis is
Ashley Vielma. The California native reflects on the memories she's made so far at FIU, her teammates and living in Miami.
Despite her first season at FIU being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Vielma earned three wins in singles action while picking up four victories in doubles play.
Q: What does it mean to be a student-athlete at FIU?
A: "Being a student-athlete at FIU is a very meaningful and enriching experience. It means discipline, responsibility and teamwork when it comes to balancing both our academic and athletic performance. Also, something unique about FIU is that we get the opportunity to be emerged in a multicultural environment. We are constantly adapting and engaging with others who come from different parts of the world and bring new perspectives."
Q: What has been your most memorable moment at FIU?
A: "My most memorable moment at FIU was when we got ranked. The list was released one morning after our practice and I remember the excitement from the entire team when we found out."
Q: Which teammate do you love to compete against and why?
A "I love competing against
Basak Akbas because she is very competitive and always pushes me out of my comfort zone."
Q: Which teammate do you admire the most?
A: "I think every single player brings a unique strength to our team. I admire how everyone always brings their best during practice and competition no matter the circumstance."
Q: Describe Miami for someone who has never been before?
A: "Miami is a city where there is always something going on. It is a place where everyone is welcome no matter where they come from or what they like to do. There are a vast number of restaurants with cuisines from all over the world, beaches, museums and art districts. The constant activity not only makes Miami a cool place to explore, but a place with many new opportunities."
Q: Favorite place to eat in Miami?
A: "Doggi's Arepa Bar."
Q: If you could pick any pro tennis major to play in which one would it be and why?
A: "I would pick the US Open because it's played at home and because I grew up playing on hard court which is my favorite surface."
Q: Describe Coach Katarina Petrovic in three words?
A: "Passionate, disciplined and accountable."
