FIU Drops Road Battle to FAU

Panthers storm back in second half but can't overcome Owls

BOCA RATON, Florida (Jan. 15, 2021) – The FIU women's basketball team fell in Friday's series opener to the Florida Atlantic Owls, with the Panthers dropping a close-call, 73-69.

Jiselle Thomas tallied 14 points before fouling out to lead all Panther scorers. Kyla Nelson scored 10 points on the night, with all points coming in the second half. Alma Danielsson hit three treys in route to 11 points for the Swedish native, while Emerald Ekpiteta pulled in a team-leading seven rebounds to go along with her 13 points.

Despite being down 41-29 at the half, FIU stormed back to take the lead at 49-46 in the third quarter, following a 19-5 run to open the second half. The run set up a back and forth game in the final frame before FAU claimed the contest.

FIU returns to action on Saturday to complete the home-and-home series with FAU. The tip is set for 4 p.m. ET inside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
