Nocentini and Gouda Tabbed C-USA Athletes of the Week

FIU swept the league awards after Nocentini and Gouda's outstanding performances last weekend

MIAMI (Jan. 27, 2021) - Jasmine Nocentini and Maha Gouda of FIU women's swimming and diving were named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week and Diver of the Week, respectively, as the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Nocentini and Gouda swept the C-USA weekly awards after helping FIU post a 2-0 record on the road in dual meets against Miami (Jan. 22) and FGCU (Jan. 23) last weekend. Nocentini helped FIU win six different events and break four program records over the course of both days, while Gouda totaled 25 points in diving events over the weekend.

Nocentini, the reigning C-USA Co-Swimmer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, placed first in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle events at Miami, posting times of 23.20 and 51.16, respectively. The Panthers also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which Nocentini clocked a 23.07 mark in the lead-off leg, breaking the record for the fastest 50 freestyle time ever in a dual meet at FIU. As a group, the Panthers recorded a 1:33.72 time in the 200 freestyle relay, standing as the fastest time ever recorded in the event at an FIU dual meet.

The following day at FGCU Nocentini bested her own 50 freestyle dual meet record, posting a 23.06 mark and taking first place in the event again. Nocentini also broke the record for fastest 100 freestyle time (50.26) ever recorded in an FIU dual meet, after winning the event at FGCU. The prolific swimmer wrapped up her stellar weekend by posting a 22.49 relay time in the 200 medley relay at FGCU, resulting in a win and helping record the fastest time ever (1:41.75) in the event at an FIU dual meet. 

Gouda, the two-time C-USA Diver of the Year, totaled 12 points against Miami in diving events and contributed 13 points the following day at FGCU. The former Olympian claimed the 3-meter event at both Miami and FGCU with scores of 338.78 and 337.80, respectively. Gouda also placed second in the 1-meter event at FGCU with a mark of 306, and third in the event against Miami with a tally of 299.33.

UP NEXT
The FIU divers are in action today against FAU in Coral Springs, Florida, as the Panthers host the first of two meetings against the Owls this week. The swimmers will break out this Saturday, Jan. 30th at the Biscayne Bay Aquatics Center for the second portion of the dual meet between FIU and FAU. That contest is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
