MIAMI (Oct. 13, 2021) - Stephanie Hussey and
Mandy Song of FIU women's swimming and diving were named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Miranda and Song claimed the awards on Wednesday after helping FIU place finish ahead of two Power 5 foes at the annual TYR Fall Classic last weekend, while breaking three venue records at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center. Hussey contribute to each FIU broken record and helped FIU win four swimming events over a two-day span. Song dominated both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the TYR Fall Classic, posting the highest marks among all competitors in both events.
Hussey helped FIU shatter the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center record in the 400 freestyle relay, contributing to an impressive time of 3:24.51. In the 400 medley relay, Hussey helped the Panther group post a blazing mark of 3:42.66 to win the event, while breaking another pool record and a TYR Fall Classic record in the event. Hussey also secured a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, helping the group post a collective time of 1:33.19. Individually, Hussey broke another record with a pool-best mark of 4:15.70 to win the 400 IM, while beating the event's second-place finisher by nearly seven seconds and missing a personal-best by a mere 0.12 seconds. In the 500 freestyle, Hussey nabbed first-place with a time of 4:58.30. Hussey also finished third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.38. Additionally, Hussey accomplished all of this while competing against three Power 5 foes, including Florida State, TCU, and Pitt.
Song won first place in the 1-meter A Final with a score of 323.45. In the 3-meter the day prior, Song posted the event's highest mark with a score of 321.85 to win the B Final. Although Song competed in the B Final, she still had the highest score among all competitors, including higher than FIU Olympian
Maha Gouda (308.70), who competed for FIU in the A Final and had the highest score in that heat. Both the 1-meter and 3-meter scores stood as NCAA zone qualifying scores for Song. Even more impressive was that Song achieved both event's highest scores while competing against divers from Power 5 programs, including Florida State, TCU, and Pitt.
