No. 14 FIU Hosts ODU this Friday on Alumni Night

Panthers welcome the Monarchs as FIU celebrates Blue & Gold soccer legends

MIAMI (Oct. 21, 2021) – The No. 14 ranked FIU men's soccer team plays its second home game of the week this Friday, Oct. 22, when the Panthers welcome Old Dominion on Alumni Night at FIU Soccer Stadium.

First kick is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.

FIU will have several standout Panther soccer alumni in attendance on Friday night, as the Blue & Gold honor and reunite with a group of program legends.

MATCH PREVIEW
FIU owns a 9-1-2 record this season, including a perfect 5-0 mark at home, and an undefeated 4-0-1 record in C-USA play. The Panthers are fresh off a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory at home over C-USA newcomer Coastal Carolina this past Tuesday, when FIU scored back-to-back goals in less than 75 seconds to seize the lead in the waning moments of regulation.

ODU has logged a 2-7-1 record this season and is searching for its first win since Sept. 14 against George Mason. The Monarchs have posted a 2-7-1 record this year, including a 0-4-1 mark in league play to go along with a 1-4-0 road record. ODU dropped its most recent contest against Kentucky (Oct. 15) by a score of 0-2 at home.

SCOUTING THE MONARCHS
ODU is led offensively by freshman midfielder Eliot Goldthorp, who has recorded 7 points on the season, including three goals and one assist. Goldthorp also leads the Monarchs in shot attempts (20) and shots-on-goal (10). Sophomore Eli Carr leads ODU with two assists in the 2021 campaign.

Between the pipes, Djibril Doumbia has started all 10 games for the Monarchs and collected 39 saves on 115 shots faced, while allowing 19 goals. Doumbia has logged a .672 save percentage this year along with a 1.86 goals-against-average.

FIU BY THE NUMBERS
The Panthers recently achieved a No. 14 ranking in the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which marks FIU's highest since the 2003 season.

FIU has also been ranked for seven straight weeks in the USC Top-25 national poll and has climbed as high as No. 13 this season. The Blue & Gold stands as the highest-ranked program in the state of Florida, and one of three teams from Conference USA to be ranked in the national poll.

FIU stands top in the nation in several statistical categories, including No. 1 in the nation in shots-per-game (18.00) and No. 3 in shots-on-goal per game (7.92).

Additionally, the Panthers rank No. 8 in goals-against-average (.640), No. 10 in goal differential (21), No. 11 in win percentage (.818), and No. 13 in scoring offense (2.42 goals-per-game). FIU also ranks No. 16 nationally in both shutout percentage (.500) and points-per-game (7), while sitting at No. 25 in assists-per-game (2.17).

The Panthers lead all C-USA teams in total shot attempts (236), goals (29), and points-per-game. FIU also ranks second in the conference in total assists (26) and goals allowed (8).

11 different Panthers have scored this season in what has been a truly balanced attack, with Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro (6), Stephen Afrifa (6), Kareem Riley (4), David Garcia (3), and Talla Faye (3) leading the way. FIU has seen a defender score in eight of its 12 contests this season, with Garcia, Riley, Philip Hildebrandt (1), and Carlos Scheckermann (1) all contributing goals.

The center back duo of Riley and Garcia have anchored FIU's defense and lead the squad in minutes played, with 1073 and 955, respectively.
