MIAMI (Oct. 8, 2021) – The FIU women's swimming and diving team opened the TYR Fall Classic with an impressive performance on Friday, as the Panthers broke two Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center records and finished Day One sitting at second-place overall with 213 points.
FIU trails first-place FSU by only four points in the contest and stands in great position heading into the final day of the meet on Saturday.
TCU sits in third overall with 148.5 points, while Pitt (146), Missouri State (125), FAU (121), Lynn (88), and Keiser (80.5) follow behind. The Blue & Gold are currently besting two Power 5 programs in TCU (Big 12) and Pitt (ACC).
FIU won four events on the day and saw nine top-three finishes while winning six total heats. For the Panthers, the meet was highlighted with record-shattering times in the 400-yard medley relay and the 400 individual medley.
The group of Julia Miranda, Stephanie Hussey, Christie Chue, and Elinah Phillip opened the meet with a blazing mark of 3:42.66 to win the 400 medley relay, while breaking both a BBC pool record and a TYR Fall Classic record.
Hussey continued her impressive start to the season with a BBC pool record time of 4:15.70 to win the 400 IM, beating the event's second-place finisher by nearly seven seconds and missing a personal-best by a mere 0.12 seconds.
Miranda continued her undefeated streak to start the season, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.36. Sara Gyertyanffy finished first in the B Final with a time of 56.08.
On the diving side, Maha Gouda won the women's 3-meter dive A Final with a score of 308.70, while Mandy Song posted the event's highest mark (321.85) to win the B Final.
Freshman Chue continues to be impactful for FIU, as the Panther snagged second place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.60) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:51.81).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Phillip raced to third place with a time of 23.55 and missed the top spot by only .20 seconds. Kelsie Campbell finished second in the B Final with a time of 24.17.
Miranda's undefeated streak came to an end later in the meet, as the Panther notched an honorable second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.17. Campbell placed second in the B Final with a time of 56.32.
Delaine Goll secured third place for FIU in the 100 breaststroke B Final with a mark of 1:05.25, while Lamija Medosevic secured fifth in the 200 freestyle B Final with a time of 1:54.16. Mia Zahab placed fourth in the 400 IM B Final with a time of 4:33.25.
The team of Phillip, Campbell, Medosevic, and Hussey finished the meet strong with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:33.19 in the last event of Day One.

FIU looks to carry momentum into Day Two of the TYR Fall Classic, as the Panthers resume competition on Saturday, Oct. 9. Events are set to begin at 10 a.m. ET at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
