ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The FIU men's basketball team made all eight of its free throw attempts in the final 48 seconds of regulation to run its current winning streak to three consecutive games with a hard fought 63-60 win over Green Bay on Friday night at the Jersey Mike's Classic in St. Petersburg.
The game was tightly contested throughout and was tied seven times and saw a total of 11 lead changes. The Panthers finally claimed the lead for good at the 3:56 mark of the second half on a dunk by
Clevon Brown that put FIU ahead 53-51.
Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch as the Panthers were limited to a 36 percent (18-of-50) clip from the field, while Green Bay only managed to make 17-of-51 (33.3%) attempts from the field.
The difference in the game was FIU's depth and its performance at the charity stripe. The Panthers' bench outscored the Phoenix 25-14. FIU connected on 24-of-28 free throw attempts, including going a perfect 8-for-8 in the final 48 seconds.
Junior
Tevin Brewer paced the Panthers with a team-best 16 points, while going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. He added five assists and six rebounds in a team-high 34 minutes.
Isaiah Banks and
Victor Hart chipped in nine points and five rebounds each.
Donovan Ivory (27) and Emmanuel Ansong (18) scored 45 of Green Bay's 60 points in the loss. FIU nabbed nine steals in the win.
FIU held Green Bay without a field goal for over four minutes at the end of regulation. Following a dunk by Ansong at 4:47, the Phoenix were held without a bucket until a three-pointer by Kamari McGee with 23 seconds left.
The win marks the Panthers' third straight and its second straight at the Jersey Mike's Classic. FIU moves to 3-1 overall, while Green Bay slips to 0-4.
