Women's Basketball Edged by Jacksonville in Final Seconds

Panthers fall to Dolphins in close contest

MIAMI (Nov. 30, 2021) – The FIU women's basketball team fell in a close contest on Tuesday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, as the Jacksonville Dolphins edged the Panthers by a score of 35-33.

FIU's record now stands at 4-3 on the season, while JU improves to 3-2.

Emerald Ekpiteta surpassed the 900 career points mark on Tuesday night, as the Panther logged four in the contest and now stands at 901 for her collegiate run.

Ekpiteta also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while Kyla Nelson led FIU in scoring with seven points to go along with six boards.

Ariel Colon shot 60 percent from the field while knocking down one of two attempts from beyond the arc.

FIU was in control for most of the contest and led for a total time of 31:42. The Blue & Gold defense forced 15 Jacksonville turnovers on the night while causing the Dolphins to shoot 24 percent from the field, including 1-for-12 on three-pointers.

The Panthers led by five points at halftime and were ahead the entire third quarter as FIU took a 30-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With less than five minutes remaining in the fourth, the Dolphins were able to finally tie things up at 33-33. A defensive battle took place the rest of the way, before two free throws by the Dolphins with nine seconds left sealed a two-point victory for JU.

FIU looks to bounce back against another team from Jacksonville, Florida this Saturday, Dec. 4, when the Panthers welcome UNF to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. ET.
