FORT MYERS, Florida (Feb. 19, 2021) - The FIU softball team fell in extra innings on Friday afternoon, as the Panthers were edged out by UConn 4-3 in nine innings to open play at the FGCU Tournament.
With the loss, FIU falls to 3-1 on the year while UConn improves to 2-0. The Panthers will have a rematch against UConn at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, after taking on Northern Illinois at 11:15 a.m. to open play tomorrow.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning, following a two-run double by
AnnMarie Cooker, but the Huskies would tie the game in the fifth inning after a pair of runs. Both teams would score a run in the eighth inning to even the score at 3-3, before a SAC fly in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run for UConn.

Brittany Phillips,
Bailey Grossenbacher and Cooker each earned a hit on Friday, while Cooker led the Panthers with a pair of RBI. Despite earning the loss in the circle,
Kendahl Dunford pitched 8.1 innings, struck out nine and gave up no earned runs.

FIU takes on Northern Illinois at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, before capping the day with a rematch against UConn at 4:15 p.m.
