Men's Soccer Falls to UNF

Panthers battled despite playing down a man for most the way

MIAMI (Feb. 21, 2021) – On a windy Sunday afternoon in Miami that saw gusts of up to 20 miles per hour, the FIU men's soccer team fell for the first time in 2021, as the North Florida Ospreys defeated the Panthers by a score of 1-0.

FIU's record now stands at 1-1 on the season, while UNF improves to 2-1.

The Panthers played down a man for much of the way on Sunday after the officials issued a red card to FIU in the 29th minute. UNF was able to capitalize off the advantage in the 42nd minute and gain a 1-0 lead going into the break, while the Panthers managed to fire away six shot-attempts in the opening period.

FIU held its own following the intermission despite being down a Panther, with the Blue & Gold penetrating into the attacking third repeatedly and edging the Ospreys 6-3 in the shot-attempt column during the second half. UNF saw a red card issued to one of its own players in the 71st minute to even the field of play, but FIU was unable to find its equalizer as time expired and UNF claimed the win.

The Panthers led the Ospreys 12-11 in the shot margin for the afternoon, with a total of nine Panthers logging attempts. Alessandro Campoy recorded FIU's lone shot on-goal in the match.

Between the posts, Johan Peñaranda and Grant Makela split time, nabbing three and two saves, respectively.

Midfielder Kareem Riley and defender David Garcia played a full 90-minutes in the contest.

UP NEXT
FIU's next scheduled home contest is slated for Saturday, Mar. 6, when the Panthers welcome FAU to the FIU Soccer Stadium. First kick against the Owls is slated for Noon.
