GREENSBORO, North Carolina (March 18, 2021) - In the first NCAA Championship appearance of her young career,
Jasmine Nocentini finished 28th in the 50 freestyle as the sophomore closed out the first of three events she will compete in at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
"Jasmine had a really good swim in the prelims today, she didn't make it to the finals, but she moved up from being seeded 35th coming into the meet to 28th," FIU head coach
Randy Horner said. "We're happy about the result and it bodes well for the 200 freestyle tomorrow. We're excited for day two on Friday."
The Padova, Italy, native clocked a time of 22.39 in the 50 freestyle on Thursday. Nocentini will swim in the 200 freestyle on Friday, with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals set for 6 p.m.
"Jasmine executed the race really well today," Horner said. "From her start to the turn and finish, she had no real mistakes, which is a really great accomplishment at this level. It was a really solid race today for Jasmine."
Nocentini will be joined by fellow Panther
Maha Gouda on Friday as the diver represents FIU in the 3-meter, with prelims set for 12:30 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. All events will be aired on ESPN3 and results can be found
here.
The top eight places (1-8) in each preliminary will advance to the evening's finals and earn NCAA All-American honors. The next eight places (9-16) will compete in the 'B' final and will be awarded NCAA All-American honorable mention status.
