GREENSBORO, North Carolina (March 8, 2021) - The FIU divers completed day two of NCAA Zone B Championships on Monday, March 8, with
Maha Gouda highlighting the day by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 3-meter dive with a score of 638.85.
"Today, we performed much better than we did on day one," said Diving Coach
Nick Yang. "Maha didn't miss any dives today, she is just so awesome. Maha knows how to control her rhythm during these kind of big competitions and brings a lot of heart. She came back strong today!"
Day two of zones at the Greensboro Aquatic Center began with the 3-meter prelims at 10:30 a.m., followed by the finals at 12:30 p.m. The diving trio of Gouda,
Mandy Song, and
Rachel Foord all competed and finished seventh (317.80), 10th (287.95), and 13th (281.10) in the prelims, respectively.
With the top-18 prelim finishers advancing to the finals, all three divers continued on and performed admirably. Gouda finished seventh overall at the final round's completion, with Song finishing eighth (615.40) and Foord finishing 10th (586.10)
"Rachel dived pretty consistently as well today and made top-10 [in the 3-meter]," said Coach Yang. "If she can qualify for NCAA Championships tomorrow in the platform, she will qualify for NCAAs in the 3-meter."
Only the top-seven finishers in the 3-meter dive automatically advanced to the NCAA Championships on March 17-20, leaving Gouda as the lone Panther to do so. However, per NCAA rules, if Foord qualifies in the platform tomorrow, she will advance in the 3-meter as well due to her top-10 score on Monday.
"Mandy unfortunately did miss two big dives in the prelims," continued Yang. "But we changed her dive list and she competed very well in the final round. Just an unlucky day for her, but I am still so incredibly proud of all three of them."
The Panthers will wrap up at zones on Tuesday, March 9, when the platform dive takes place on the final day of NCAA Zones. Gouda, Song, and Foord will all compete in the event.
Prelims will get underway beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with finals beginning at 11:45 a.m. The top-18 finishers from the platform prelims will advance to the final round again, while the top-8 in the platform finals will advance to the National Championships.
A live stream of NCAA Zone B events will be available via the
