MIAMI (April 3, 2021) – Despite a depleted roster and playing on the tail end of five games in four days, the FIU baseball team run-ruled visiting WKU 10-0 on Saturday afternoon as the Panthers took three out of four games from the Hilltoppers.
FIU used 10 freshmen in total against WKU, as the Panthers won their first C-USA series of the young season despite being down five starters from the opening day lineup.
With the outfield missing a pair of starters, the trio of
Steven Ondina,
Adrian Figueroa and
Dante Girardi drove in six of FIU's 10 runs on the afternoon. Over the last 12 games, Ondina has reached safely in each contest, while Figueroa has earned a hit in each of the 12 outings.
Steven Casey earned the win on the mound, after pitching five innings, allowing no runs, surrendering just two hits and striking out three. Relievers
Everett Hurst and
Angel Tiburcio held WKU hitless over the final two innings to preserve the shutout.
The Panther offense scored five runs over the first three innings on Saturday, highlighted by
Justin Farmer's team-leading fourth homer of the year in the third inning. FIU scored four more in the fourth frame, thanks to three Hilltopper errors, before
Ben Rozenblum scored on a
Derek Cartaya sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to push the lead to 10-0.
