ORLANDO, Florida (May 7, 2021) - Despite
Kamila Umarova taking the first set against the nation's No. 1 ranked singles player, the FIU women's tennis team couldn't overcome 23rd-ranked Miami (FL) as the Panthers fell in the opening round on Friday.
No. 41 FIU closes out the 2021 spring slate with 12 wins, a Conference USA Championship match appearance and an NCAA Tournament berth.
The doubles point was highly contested on Friday, but the Hurricanes clinched it with a pair of 6-4 wins on courts two and three.
FIU won three first sets in singles play, including a 6-4 score for Umarova over top-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba. The Hurricanes took decisions on courts two, five and six to clinch the 4-0 win however, before the other three matches could finish.
