Women's Soccer Falls to App State

Panthers edged by Mountaineers in Miami

MIAMI (Sep. 12, 2021) – The FIU women's soccer team fell to Appalachian State by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, as the Blue & Gold played its final non-conference match of the 2021 fall season.

FIU saw early opportunities to score when Sydney Amparo fired shot-on-goal attempts in the second and seventh minute-marks. The Mountaineers found the back of the net in the 25th minute however when App State capitalized immediately following a water break.

Kedie Johnson nearly struck gold for FIU two minutes later but the Panther's shot attempt was denied by the crossbar. Amparo kept the pressure on with two more shots-on-goal at the 27th and 31st-minute marks, and Paige Davis saw a great opportunity with an on-goal strike of her own at the 44th minute, but FIU was unable to convert any of the attempts. The Panthers went into the intermission out-shooting App State by a margin of 7-3, including five on-goal attempts compared to the Mountaineers' two.

FIU remained aggressive after the break as the Panthers hunted for an equalizer. The Blue & Gold saw chances early and often in the second period and out-shot the Mountaineers 12-1 in the final 45 minutes. Laia Munoz Danon had a shot attempt from within the box blocked at the 51st minute, and Amparo fired two more shots-on-goal at the 51st and 53rd minute-marks, but the Panthers were unable to find the back of the net. Idelys Vazquez saw a chance sail high at the 54th minute, and Courtney Walker had a shot on-goal attempt saved by the Mountaineers' keeper at the 60th minute.

FIU fired off another seven shot attempts in the final 20 minutes of play, but App State's defense held strong and denied all attempts by the Blue & Gold. Reagan Bridges had a shot-attempt blocked in the 71st minute, and Amparo placed two more strikes on-frame at the 73rd and 84th minute-marks. Paige David also saw a shot go just wide at the 85th minute, and a last-second attempt by Carmen Marin in the 90th minute was saved by the Mountaineers' keeper.

Overall, the Panthers tallied a total of 19 shots for the day, including 11 on-goal. Amparo led FIU with eight shot attempts on Sunday afternoon which were all on-goal.

Bridges and Deborah Bien-Aime each went the distance with a full 90-minutes played in the contest. Casey Kane started between the posts for FIU and recorded two saves.
